Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous

Warner Bros. Pictures

Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous. The first movie is my favorite of all time, but the sequel is absolute trash. It was so unnecessary!!! It’s not funny, only two or three characters from the first movie are in it, and it takes away all of the charm of the first story! I never thought I would hate a movie with Sandra Bullock, but damn I try not to remember that this abomination exists.”

Mean Girls 2

Paramount Famous

Mean Girls 2 is the worst sequel to one of the best movies ever. It’s so poorly written that I literally cringed at the dialogue. The sequel also has nothing to do with the original story and is basically a reboot with much worse characters. The main character is so over-the-top edgy that she’s basically screaming, ‘I’m not like other girls!’ The original movie has a great message and the sequel fails to even acknowledge one.”

Mulan II

Disney

Mulan should never have had a sequel. The first movie had the perfect ending: she had the respect of her family and country. That was the main storyline, and her secondary storyline was her romance with Li Shang. The second movie only focused on romance the entire time and it felt completely out of character.”

Jumanji: The Next Level

Columbia Pictures

Jumanji: The Next Level. Jumanji was a standalone success that was written into the ground with the crappy additional movies that absolutely nobody asked for. It was almost painful to watch. If someone that slipped into a coma 20 years ago woke up when the new Jumanji premiered, they’d request to be ‘put back under’ immediately. I am normally pretty stoked about reboots and sequels, but this one wasn’t it.

Don’t even get me started on the second ‘sequel’…”

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

Universal Pictures

Mamma Mia 2. Don’t get me wrong, I love every single one of those actors. The songs were great, the actors were great (mostly), but the whole movie just felt…forced. Cher’s character was crowbarred into the story, despite Donna implying in the first movie that she was dead. And I’ll never forgive them for killing off Donna.”

Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde

MGM Distribution Co.

Legally Blonde 2. It was just terrible. The storyline was bad, the writing was bad, and it was missing the quirkiness of the first movie.”

Toy Story 4

Disney

Toy Story 4 ruined my childhood. I sobbed at the end because I couldn’t believe Woody left all of his friends for Bo Peep (who was completely different than who she was in the other movies). The other toys were BARELY in the movie and we lost their personalities, especially Buzz. The plot was boring. Even though I was sad to see Andy give away his favorite toys to a stranger (who didn’t even end up appreciating them), Toy Story 3 was a good enough ending. We did not need Toy Story 4.”

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues

Paramount Pictures

Anchorman 2. The first movie was terrific in a lightning-in-a-bottle way: It was hysterical, irreverent, fun, memorably quotable, and eminently re-watchable. The second one was a MAJOR disappointment. It felt like they were desperately trying way too hard to recapture the same spirit as the first, but so much of the movie fell flat. It was nothing compared to the delight I felt while watching/rewatching the original. A week after I saw the sequel, I’d already forgotten almost everything about it, and I have no desire to watch it again.”

Pitch Perfect 2 & 3

Universal Pictures

“The Pitch Perfect sequels. The first one was absolute magic. I was so looking forward to a sequel, but they absolutely butchered them both. They should have quit while they were ahead.”

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Disney

Pirates of the Caribbean 4. It was so unnecessary and a total cash grab, as well as Dead Men Tell No Tales. The first three movies were all the franchise needed. The third film wasn’t the best but it wrapped up the story and was a good end to the trilogy. Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley missing from the fourth made it feel incomplete, and any new characters introduced felt forced in the franchise. The worst part is that they butchered the previously iconic Jack Sparrow and he just came across as a tired caricature. Apparently, there’s still another movie coming out and there’s no doubt in my mind it’s going to be a boring repeat of the same old formula.”

Frozen II

Disney

Frozen 2. Each song except ‘Into the Unknown’ was forgettable. It was interesting what they did with Elsa, but I thought every other main character got a little worse.”

Bigger Fatter Liar

George Engel

Bigger, Fatter, Liar!!! Big Fat Liar was such an iconic movie of the ’00s. Amanda Bynes and Frankie Muniz: iconic! They tried to make a sequel that didn’t even come close to how good the first is.”

Ralph Breaks the Internet

Disney

Ralph Breaks the Internet…The ending of the original Wreck-It Ralph was so cute and perfect and so amazingly Disney, and then they split up the two main characters at the end of the sequel. It never needed to happen!”

Grease 2

Paramount Pictures

“I think the Grease sequel was completely unnecessary. I tried watching it once on Netflix but it was just so horrible, and I especially hated the songs. Also, the fact that the only original cast member in the movie was Frenchy made no sense to me whatsoever.”

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2

Universal Pictures

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. It’s so, so bad. Reused jokes and regurgitated characters. There was no charm, a boring plot, and no point.”

Zoolander 2

Paramount Pictures

Zoolander 2! Literally the first one ends on a happy ending with Derek and Matilda together having opened up the reading center with a young child. The second movie opens with the center burning down, Matilda dying, and Derek being a neglectful father to his son. The original movie was kind of bizarre in an entertaining way (gasoline fight, orgy, Magnum stopping the throwing star), but the second one escalated it to the point where it was no longer entertaining.”

The Hangover Parts II and III

Warner Bros. Pictures

The Hangover sequels. Come on. Great initial premise, but the grab for extra cash by appealing not just to fans of the original film but to the international market by having the random setting of Thailand? Know when you made a good thing and be happy to leave it at that.”

Sex and the City 2

Warner Bros. Pictures

Sex and the City 2. The first film was perfect and they had beautiful clothes like they always did in the show. It would have been lovely to have a sequel that was equal to it in greatness. But instead, we got that dumpster fire cringe-fest that was Sex and the City 2. The clothes weren’t even nice!”

19.

The Matrix sequels

Warner Bros. Pictures

The Matrix sequels. I know the first one technically ended on a cliffhanger, but I think it’s really memorable and a really good standalone movie. I barely remember the sequels and they have no rewatch value. I would have been totally fine with the first one ending on a cliffhanger and never knowing what happened after.”

20.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

TSG Entertainment

Kingsman: The Golden Circle was so unnecessary. The writing had too many references to the original film without the charm.”

The Home Alone sequels

Fox Television Studios

“OK, I discovered that there are FIVE (?!?) Home Alone movies? The first one was iconic, why mess it up with four more???”

savagesiri724

22.

Cinderella II: Dreams Come True

Disney

Cinderella 2. With Disney+ being my jam, I have been trying to have Disney movie marathons as often as I can. So after I watched Cinderella, I tried to watch Cinderella 2 and man, cringey is the only word I think I would use to describe it. I couldn’t get through the first seven minutes.”

23.

The Despicable Me sequels

Universal Pictures

“Unpopular opinion but Despicable Me just kept going downhill with every new movie. The first one had so much character development and was really cute. Then the second one was boring (the spy plot is just so overused). The third one was just awful! There was no need for any sequel!!!”

elliescudder9

24.

The Divergent sequels

Lionsgate

“The Divergent sequels. I know there were two more books, but they should have stopped at the first film. In the first Divergent movie, they stuck pretty closely to the book, but Insurgent was all over the place.”

joeyislas

25.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Warner Bros. Pictures

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. The first movie worked well as a standalone film. Its sequel failed to build upon the previous film and wrecked all of the characters that we were introduced to in the first film.”

26.

Now You See Me 2

Summit Entertainment

Now You See Me 2. They could never top the unbelievable twist of the first one, so why try? Plus, without the full original cast, the sequel couldn’t hold a candle.”

And The Godfather Part III

Paramount Pictures

The Godfather Part III. The first two are individually great films. In the third, the incest storyline between Vincent and Mary is a major turnoff as well as Michael being more concerned for his daughter’s ‘safety’ rather than, oh, I don’t know, them literally being first cousins?! The convoluted pope/Vatican bank subplot was awful and hard to follow as well. I think Coppola did the third film because he needed money for his vineyard (great wine BTW), but they lowballed Robert Duvall and shorted us on a better story between Tom & Michael.”
